The expensive choice
Sweet potato flour costs more than wheat or corn. A lot more. But cheap fillers make cheap food. We’re not in that game.
Why it matters
Most dog treats are bulked out with cereals or refined starch. Easy to make. Easy to sell. Easy on the profit margins. But what do they do for your dog? Not much. We wanted a base that works harder. That meant sweet potato flour. Pricier. Harder to source. Worth it.
The benefits
- Digestive support. Many dogs tolerate sweet potato flour well. It provides a gentle, grain-free option that can suit dogs with more sensitive stomachs.
- Rich in fibre. The fibre content can help maintain healthy digestion, support a balanced gut microbiome, and promote regular, firm stools.
- Nutrient contribution. Sweet potatoes naturally contain beta-carotene (a source of vitamin A), vitamin B6, potassium, and manganese. While some heat-sensitive vitamins like vitamin C may be reduced during processing, key nutrients are still present.
- Steady energy. Depending on how it is processed, sweet potato flour can provide a slower release of carbohydrates compared with some common starch sources, helping to avoid rapid spikes and drops in blood sugar.
- Weight management. Fibre helps promote satiety, which can assist in maintaining a healthy weight when combined with an appropriate diet and exercise.
- Useful in special diets. Sweet potato is often included in veterinary elimination diets as a novel carbohydrate source for dogs with suspected food sensitivities.
- Palatability. Its natural mild sweetness makes it appealing to dogs without the need for added sugars or artificial flavourings.
The science
Studies show fibre in dog diets can improve satiety and stool quality, and shift the gut microbes in a good way.
Sweet potato brings beta-carotene, which dogs convert to vitamin A for skin, eyes and immunity.
Starch source and cooking method affect blood sugar. Sweet potato, if handled right, can deliver a slower rise than some alternatives.
And here’s the kicker: around half of UK dogs are overweight. That can knock up to 2.5 years off a dog’s life, depending on breed. Fibre-rich bases like sweet potato can help push back.
Why we pay more
Sweet potato flour is several times the cost of wheat. That’s the reality. But it earns its keep: more nutrition, better tolerance, taste dogs love. A filler is cheap. A foundation costs more. We choose the foundation.
In short
We’d rather spend on an ingredient that brings something to the bowl. Sweet potato flour gives fibre, phytonutrients, steady energy, and taste. And when half the nation’s dogs are overweight, those details matter.
